Text: Hebrews 10: 23-25

23Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

  • Hebrews 10:25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
    • “Give up” is the word Egkataleipo (egkataleipo) eng-kat-al-i’-po.
      • abandon, desert
      • to leave in straits, leave helpless
      • give a sense that one is totally abandoned
      • gives a sense that one is utterly forsaken
    • This was not an occasional missing of worship. This was ahabit.
    • This was “abandonment”. This was “utterly forsaking” meeting with the other believers.
    • The encouragement is basically to “not give up on meeting together”. The writer of Hebrews knew what we all should know: corporate worship is important. It matters.
    • Example of the hot, red fireplace and pulling a piece of wood out and it cooling and turning black.

How’s your fire?

Back to our discussion from last week about the “Sabbath”…

  • Mark 2:27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”
    • Again, like we saw last week: It was created for US to have a day of worship and REST.
    • We were not made to worship the day of the week, but created to worship the God of every day!
    • This particular verse was also the beginning of Jesus’ references to worship being more than just a “Sabbath” day event.

Which leads us to following: our “Sabbath” may not be Saturday, but having a day of meeting together for worship and having a day of rest is still just as valid today as it was 5,000 years ago. For Jesus also said in Matthew 5:17 NLT, “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to fulfill them.”
