The song is based around the idea of Advent, or simply the incarnation of Jesus. We wanted to write a song that captured the essence of what the birth of Christ truly means for His church, just as the angel shared with the shepherds in Luke 2.
Last year, we sat down to write a song for our church’s Advent series, entitled “The Coming.” The sermons were titled “The Coming of Hope”, “The Coming of Promise”, “The Coming of Joy”, and “The Coming of Jesus”. We wanted the song to reinforce the content of the sermons in a way that would really minister to our congregation, so the song basically started with an acoustic guitar and a chorus. From there, we tackled the verses bit by bit, hitting on the major things that the birth of Christ accomplished or portrayed. Once the lyrics and basic chord progression were finished, we played an acoustic version for our church throughout the month of December last year, and our pastors and church family encouraged us to record the song for the Christmas season this year. We spent a couple of months creating a full band vibe for the song, reworking the chord progression, adding a musical tag, and refining the lyrics. Jon (our drummer/composer/boy wonder) sat down and worked his magic in Logic, adding some textures, nailing down specific sounds, and rounding out the song, then we took his preproduction to our friend and producer Jared Fox at Fox Den Studio in Nashville to track the song. Jared stepped in as kind of a 5th member and helped us cut out the unnecessary parts and really make the song stand out.
Using this song in church
This song simply makes much of the person and work of Jesus. It’s a reminder that the creator of the universe came to earth to save His people, it’s a reminder that our hope and our joy is in Him alone, it’s a reminder that God keeps His promises, and it’s a reminder that through Christ we’re adopted as sons into the kingdom of God.
God has definitely worked through this song to bless our congregation. We were fortunate to see the church sing along to edify one another during our worship services last year, and we were fortunate to see our people singing the song to themselves outside of church, and we’ve seen the Lord work in the hearts of people as they encouraged us both verbally and financially to record the song. Without the love that these people have shown us, we wouldn’t have been able to get this song recorded, so we know God is going to continue to use this song to build up His people.
