“You sounded great. You’re getting better!”
“Every time…” I think to myself. My worship pastor is awesome at encouraging his musicians. Never have I felt as though I wasn’t enough or that I wasn’t doing well. This is awesome most of the time, except for that it makes it difficult to know where I can improve.
And I think that this is where honesty is paramount in worship. Never would I suggest that leaders be overly eager to point out areas where their musicians can improve, but in Psalms 33:3 the bible says to “Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy”. I think that is means that worship leaders ought to be willing to help their musicians hone their skills, even if it means occasionally suggesting they focus their practice on certain areas. Regardless of whether or not you’re a leader or a supporting musician, I encourage you to be honest about areas in which you can improve your musicianship. The Lord has blessed you with the ability to lead other believers in worship, and He deserves your honesty and dedication to improvement.
