You may be familiar with Darlene Zschech through her work with Hillsong, her popular song “Shout to The Lord”, or her newly released album “Revealing Jesus”. In 2001 she wrote Extravagant Worship, a book discussing the principles that Hillsong clings to in their worship department.

The overarching theme in this nine chapter book is Zschech’s desire for us to be “Extravagant Worshippers”, people who are excessive in their worship and overgenerous in their praise to God. She uses both Bible accounts and personal experiences to describe this type of worship.

Using this theme Zschech is able to engage her readers in topics throughout the book regarding our hearts behind worship, our struggle as selfish performers, excellence in our worship services, continuing education, unity, power and pitfalls of success (this part is great), pride, talent v. faithfulness, loving the church you’re in, and more.

Zschech also brings up some practical topics that we as Worship Leaders are always looking for answers too. Topics such as; lighting and production, choir auditions, what does your Pastor expect, songwriting, etc. One section I found particularly interesting debates the idea of the ebb and flow of a worship service. In this point she labels zombie worship (where people are “just there” on the platform) and sweating for blood worship (a team who is so energetic and up and down that they can actually be a distraction to those trying to worship). Where’s the balance?

If you’re looking for some encouragement for your heart and your leadership character, pick up this book. This is one where you can read a section that you need when you need it. If you don’t have time to sit down and read the whole thing cover to cover don’t worry, it’s not necessary. While there are nine chapters, each chapter is separated into several smaller sections. Reading a couple sections at a time will feed your soul and inspire you to excessive, overgenerous, extravagant, worship.

Want to hear some great worship music from this woman’s heart? We’re giving away a copy of Darlene Zschech’s album Revealing Jesus, released March 2013. Since its release this has been my favorite worship album, filled with energy, love, and creativity.

Here are some great quotes from the book:

It’s a sobering fact that the only being to get thrown out of heaven was a worship leader! @darlenezschech

The strongest praise and worship songs are scripture put to music, purely because the Bible is the living, breathing, infallible word of God. @darlenezschech

Although music is a wonderful expression of worship, it is not in itself the essence of it. @darlenezschech
